A lot is happening right now, including closing on the sale of our little beach house, finishing up the build and planning our move to NW Montana. I’ve also started buying furniture to take advantage of the sales. Our move date is getting closer at just eight weeks away.
We’ll be heading out to see the build in NW Montana shortly and we’re excited to see all the progress that J Martin Builders has made on our Mountain Modern home. On this trip, we’re flying into Seattle, which allows us to stop by Interior Define to see, feel, and sit in our furniture selections for the new house. In today’s post, I’m sharing updates about our build, interior design, and the road trip we’ve planned to our new home.
Flooring

The Johnson Flooring’s wide engineered European white oak floors look really good in the house. These floors feel really nice underfoot and the aluminum oxide coating makes them more durable than onsite finished wood floors. They complement the Sherwin Williams Greek Villa wall color and keep the space feeling bright and open. The floors will be a gorgeous contrast to the walnut cabinets and other walnut elements in the home. The rural, mountain setting calls for natural materials, as does Mid-Century Modern design principles.
The white oak floors continue in our primary suite and add a lot of warmth to this northeast facing room. The darker spots in the wood add a bit of contrast and tie the floors into the black windows. We are really happy with the amount of light that comes into this space through the slider, large window and two smaller windows that will flank the bed. We’ve narrowed down our furniture choices in this room, which includes a beautiful leather bed and solid wood nightstands. I’ve also found some beautiful bedding that continues the color palette from the great room.

The tile guy has installed the porcelain tile in the second bathroom, mechanical room, laundry-mudroom. This neutral griege porcelain tile has a nice, subtle texture. It is also a nod to the terrazzo planned for our primary bath. This is a great example of how our Interior Design partner, Joni Stoll Designs helped us find something we really liked and saved us money.

The tile on the floor in the second bathroom will also go on the shower walls and in front of the tub. The larger tile size makes the space look bigger. We’ll use the tile for baseboards in anywhere we have tile. The warm, neutral color of these tiles will look great with the plumbing fixtures. It will be fun and really helpful to see everything in the space. Once we see it, I’ll be able to select towels and rugs in our color palette.

Front Door
The stone subcontractor did an awesome job with the stone veneer. The stone looks great around the front door. It grounds the house to the landscape and having it rise up around the door gives the entrance presence. The wood on the door, porch beams and posts will be stained a medium, warm brown. The warmth of the wood will contrast nicely to Sherwin Williams Jasper. This dark green exterior paint will blend in beautifully with the nearby pine trees. Adding a couple of tall pots with plants on either side of the door and a welcome mat will finish off the front entrance.

There was a small hiccup with the front door measurements, but our builder worked with the subcontractor to trim it up and it looks perfect. We’ve changed the door style over the years, but the final version with the side, door and transom windows look stunning. Those windows bring more southern light into our space. On the left side of the front door will be a coat closet and a floating, walnut bench nook. We’ve already got a live edge table and lamp for this space, so we’ll need to add a rug, art, and a few other decor pieces to make this space welcoming.

Interior Design
It’s been fun choosing the furniture and fabric selections for our Mid-Century Modern inspired home. I’m loving a combination of rusty red and dark green for our spaces. To add interest, consider using both warm, our rusty reds and cool, our greens to your color palette. Prefer blue, consider blue and coral or orange for your spaces. In our living room the rusty red and green adds pops of color to the neutral-colored Interior Define Sloan sectional in Field Chenille and Sherwin Williams Greek Villa wall color. Once inside, the Gwen velvet chairs in Rust will draw your eyes right to the Swan Range views beyond the house. The Interior Define chairs with an open, walnut framework also let light pour into the space.

A craftswoman from Turkey took seven months to hand knot the beautiful rug you see in the picture below. It is so soft, and the colors are really pretty. The 9 x 12′ rug is a wonderful, if not budget friendly addition to our design plan. We’ll sprinkle more rusty reds and greens throughout with pillows and decor. Interior Define will hold our order, until we make it to the Seattle showroom. At the showroom we’ll be able to sit, feel and see everything before they start making our furniture. This perk allows for any changes without cost. Win-Win.

We’re focusing our time and budget on the build for the next two months. As we get closer to our move date, we’ll start looking for vintage or new pieces, including a coffee and side tables for the living room. I’ll add texture with blankets and pillows in faux fur, cowhide and velvet to add depth to our design. Finishing it off with plants from http://www.easyplants.com brings the entire design together. We saved as much as 20% by ordering items during sales. Find what you want and keep an eye on the price. When it drops, consider making a purchase. Living Room Budget: $10,000
The Soap Bubble light fixture is a fun, unique piece for the dining room. It is big and will balance our large dining room table. It is also dimmable, making it easy to set the mood for parties of eight or intimate dinners for two. We pulled in some mountain vibes with the Arhaus Jacob 96″ solid walnut tabletop. The black metal base brings in the modern. The black metal also ties into the black quartzite and windows making the space feel cohesive. The Hollis chairs in Coriander Velvet brings in the colors from the forest just beyond the windows. We’ll add some rusty red to this space with a table runner and pottery for the tablescape. Arhaus will hold our “ready to ship” dining table for 90 days at no cost. We’ve got a special art project planned for the dining room wall, but we just need to figure out how to install it. This south facing space is perfect for plants, so we’ll tuck a couple of big ones into each corner. Dining Room Budget: $9,000

We continue the rusty red and green color palette in the primary suite. This room will be big enough for a king-size bed, so it is a great place to add color. The Pottery Barn Jaxson quilt fits our mid-century modern inspiration. The colors and pattern are perfect for this space. Next, I went with neutral linen sheets and a matching duvet cover. I pulled in the green and rusty red again with the shams and accent pillows. Instead of going with a set, I prefer to mix and match my bedding with different patterns, textures and colors. We really love the Pottery Barn bedding, gorgeous leather bed, nightstands and table lamps shown in the pictures below. Primary Bedroom Budget: $7,000
We still need a bed, nightstands and table lamps for the primary suite. Big box furniture stores and Wayfair have affordable ones. When shopping you’ll want to look for solid hardwoods. Be sure to check my post below to learn more about finding quality furniture.
Road Trip
I’ll be sharing road trip details to Northwest Montana soon. We plan to take our time on the drive out to Montana. Our Westie, Hanna will be with us, and we’ll be stopping in Tennessee, Kansas, South Dakota, and SW Montana before getting to the house. We’re planning a 7-day trip, including two nights in Topeka to visit with family and two nights in Hamilton, MT.

The wood floors, walnut cabinets, trim, tile, exterior and interior doors will be installed in the house the next time we go to Montana. Y’all, the cabinet pictures look really great, and we’ll get to see them in less than a week. We’re less than two months until move-in, so we’re busy and beyond excited. It has been a lot of fun working with my hubby, Jim on the design and build of our new home. We’re very different people, but those differences and unique talents make for an interesting, fun life together. We owe a big shout out to our build partner, J Martin Builders and design partner, Joni Stoll Design who have helped make this build a wonderful experience.
