Maybe you have $20,000 or more to furnish and decorate your living room, but most folks can not afford to spend that much on their entire house, let alone one room. This post will show you how to beautifully decorate your space on a budget.

Affordable Furniture

You can find affordable, attractive, and well-made vintage furniture at second-hand shops, used furniture stores, as well as, Facebook Marketplace and Buy/Sell Groups. We love the style and quality of mid-century modern furniture and were elated when we found this set from Marcie at Frogtown Finds. These Kent Coffey pieces are beautiful, but remember that vintage pieces usually have a few imperfections, so be sure to inspect the piece or ask for close-up pictures.
You can also buy well-made, painted furniture at lower prices, as well as free items on Facebook Marketplace or Nextdoor. If it needs an update, try painting it with the help of a YouTube video. Please, I am begging you, never paint wood furniture that looks as beautiful as our Kent Coffey pieces.

Perfect Rug

Check Wayfair for beautiful, affordable wool rugs. HomeGoods always has an assortment of rugs that are easy to see and feel for your bedroom, living, entry, and bathrooms. I share the basics below, but be sure to check out the helpful rug advice at How to Choose the Right Rug Sizes | Wayfair before purchasing your rug.
Bigger is better, as a few inches can make all the difference between the rug pulling the room together or making it feel off. Buying the larger option, especially if you are choosing between sizes, will be worth the extra expense every time.
Use painter’s tape to visualize the final look of the rug placement before you buy. This trick of the trade is an easy way to check that you have the right fit from every vantage point.
Pay attention to the room when choosing rug size and orientation, make sure it is proportional to the space (large rooms = large rugs), and echoes the room dimensions (long room = orient lengthwise).
Cozy Spaces

What comes to mind when you think about your home and how the interior feels to you? Does it feel relaxed, casual, formal, hard, or sterile? Adding soft goods, such as window treatments, bedding, pillows, and throws will make your spaces inviting. It is truly amazing what these simple items can either add, or if missing, detract from a space.
Adding texture with cozy blankets and throw pillows softens hard edges of a couch or chair. You can drape a knitted blanket over the back of a couch to make your space feel more comfortable. Hang curtains or window treatments for another texture and/or color layer to your space. Find great options at Target, HomeGoods, and Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Unique Décor

Find cool vintage artwork, sculptures and unique décor pieces on Facebook Marketplace, Flea Markets, and Second-hand Shops. Go to your local garden center for a few pretty plants and place them in vintage pots. Be sure to choose lighting that is soft and glowing verses a harsh, direct light. Check Wayfair and Target for affordable lighting options. Finally, remember to use the 60-30-10 Color Rule throughout all your spaces Retro Retreat – Rules are made to be Broken – Majestic Meadows.
