Coastal Modern Kitchen Reveal

This Coastal Modern kitchen was designed to look fabulous and function perfectly for this beach side townhouse. The clients, a married husband and wife with no children preferred a modern, minimalist look, which I warmed up with wood finishes, marble backsplash and unique decor.

Cabinets

The Italian Flat panel cabinetry in glossy, white reflect light, compliment the marble backsplash and provide plenty of storage. These cabinets against the wall hold:

  • Dinnerware, glasses and cups for 12
  • Serving bowls and dishes
  • Pots and pans
  • Tools
  • Pantry
  • Refrigerator

The large island in conchshell wood grain warms up the space and provides the following elements:

  • Large, deep stainless sink and disposal
  • Kohler faucet, soap dispenser, and filtered water
  • Garbage and recycle bins
  • All the cabinets in this kitchen have drawer pullouts for reaching items in the back

The cooking area pictured below provides the tools you need to prepare a gourmet meal. The drawers provide storage for pots, pans, mixing bowls, storage containers, dish towels, oven mitts and trivets, as well as additional tools.

The pantry features full extension drawers and offers plenty of space for food storage. I also put the microwave and other appliances in this space.

Countertops

The Cambria Brittanicca Quartz countertops, pictured below provides interesting movement and looks fantastic with the other kitchen elements. A single jumbo slab is big enough for the 11’ island, including the 12″ overhang for seating. Quartz is extremely durable and resists staining, but always use a trivet for hot pans to avoid discoloring the counters.

Backsplash

The owners wanted a modern, easy to clean and maintain kitchen, which initially included the quartz going up the wall as the backsplash. However, they fell in love with this marble backsplash, which looks fantastic and it added another coastal element. Keep in mind that the marble needs to be sealed and will require a bit more maintenance than the quartz.

Lighting

The recessed lights and large pendants in the kitchen provide ambient light. In addition, LED strip lighting was added under the cabinets for task lighting. Undercabinet lighting is important because a person standing at the counter will block any light coming from the ceiling. All the lighting in the kitchen and adjoining areas have dimmers, so the light can be adjusted for brightness.

Appliances

Some of the wait times for appliances are crazy right now due to the effects of COVID19 on the supply chain. If you want panel ready or white appliances, be prepared to wait several months with additional delays possible. The clients chose stainless steel LG appliances after meeting with a local appliance store, Rosner’s. They liked the look, price, and quality, plus they could be delivered when the kitchen was completed. If you are considering new appliances, I recommend an induction cooktop. Induction is easy to clean, creates zero air pollution and heats up extremely quickly.

Hardware

Mix metals are used throughout the home, including this kitchen. The timeless brushed nickel Kohler fixtures come from a local company, Broedel Plumbing Supply. They complement the gorgeous quartz without competing with it. The extra-large finger pulls at 5″ and 12″ offer clean lines that work well with the flat panel cabinets. I used stainless steel for the white and brass for the conch shell cabinets.

Finishing Touches

A colorful rug and ceramic pieces provide color and personality to this relatively neutral kitchen. I found these gently used leather West Elm counter stools on Facebook Marketplace for half the cost of new.
